Popov, Metodii Atanasov 

(also Methodi Popoff). Born Apr. 29, 1881, in Shumen; died Apr. 19, 1954, in Sofia. Bulgarian biologist. Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1947) and the Leopoldina German Academy of Naturalists (1926).

Popov graduated from the University of Sofia in 1904. Beginning in 1916, he was a professor at the university, and in 1920–21 the university’s rector. From 1923 to 1931 he was ambassador to Germany. Popov was the founder and, from 1948, director of the Institute of Biology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (now the M. Popov Institute of Plant Physiology). His principal works were on chemical stimulation of vital processes in plants and animals. He also worked in the fields of microbiology, serology, and anthropology. Popov was a deputy to the National Assembly in 1953 and a member of the World Peace Council from 1950. He was awarded the Dimitrov Prize in 1950.
