Popova, Nina Vasil’evna 

Born Jan. 9 (22), 1908, in Novokhopersk, now in Voronezh Oblast. Soviet party official and public figure. Member of the CPSU since 1932. Daughter of a worker.

Popova did Komsomol work from 1925 and soviet and party work in Moscow from 1934. From 1945 to 1957 she was secretary of the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions, and from 1945 to 1968, chairwoman of the Committee of Soviet Women and vice-chairwoman of the Women’s International Democratic Federation. From 1957, Popova served as chairwoman of the board of the All-Union Society for Cultural Relations With Foreign Countries, and from 1958 to 1975 as chairwoman of the Presidium of the Union of Soviet Societies for Friendship and Cultural Ties With Foreign Countries. She was a member of the World Peace Council, the Presidium of the Soviet Committee for the Defense of Peace, the Soviet Committee of Solidarity With the Countries of Asia and Africa, the Presidium of the Committee of Soviet Women, and the Soviet Committee for European Security and Cooperation.

Popova was elected a candidate member of the Central Committee of the CPSU at the Twentieth Congress of the CPSU and a member of the Central Committee at the Twenty-second through Twenty-fourth Congresses. She was a deptuy to the third through ninth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. She received the International Lenin Prize for Strengthening Peace Among Nations in 1953. Popova has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, four other orders, and various medals.
