Popular Socialist Party

(PPS; Partido Popular Socialista), a Mexican party founded in June 1948; called the Popular Party until October 1960. The PPS consists of members of the petite bourgeoisie and the intelligentsia, as well as students and some strata of workers and peasants. It advocates social and economic reform, state control of foreign capital, nationalization of large enterprises, and extension of agrarian reform. In foreign policy, it supports the peaceful coexistence of states with different social and economic systems, an independent foreign policy for Mexico, and the development of relations with the USSR and other socialist countries. The Popular Socialist Youth is the party’s youth organization.

The PPS is organized on the territorial and production principle. The highest party organ is the National Assembly (congress); between congresses the work of the party is directed by the Central Committee and its executive body, the National Leadership. J. Cruikshank García is general secretary of the National Leadership. The party publishes the theoretical journals Nueva democracia and Viva Mexico, as well as a news bulletin.
