Pori (pô`rē), Swed. Björneborg, city (1998 pop. 76,375), Western Finland prov., SW Finland, near the mouth of the Kokemaënjoki River. Timber and metals are exported, and chemical and wood products are manufactured. A deepwater harbor complex was opened in 1985 for the importation of oil and coal, but due to silting the city has become farther from the harbor waters. Pori was chartered in 1564 and was initially dominated by the Hanseatic League Hanseatic League , mercantile league of medieval German towns. It was amorphous in character; its origin cannot be dated exactly. Originally a Hansa was a company of merchants trading with foreign lands.

Pori (Swedish Björneborg), a city and port in southwestern Finland, on the Gulf of Bothnia of the Baltic Sea, in Turku-Pori Lääni (Province). Population, 78,100 (1973). A railroad junction, Pori is an important timber center of Finland, with sawmills and pulp-and-paper enterprises. It has machine-building, non-ferrous-metallurgy, textile and food-processing industries. It exports lumber products. The outer harbors are Reporsaari and Mä ntyluoto.
