porosity [pə′räs·əd·ē]
(physics) Property of a solid which contains many minute channels or open spaces. The fraction as a percent of the total volume occupied by these channels or spaces; for example, in petroleum engineering the ratio (expressed in percent) of the void space in a rock to the bulk volume of that rock. porosity A ratio, usually expressed as a percentage, of the volume of voids in a material to the total volume of the material, including the voids. The voids permit gases or liquids to pass through the material. Porosity in geology, the aggregate of pores, joints, channels, and other cavities in a rock massif, regardless of their shape and dimensions.
