In northeastern OH, east of Akron; organized Jun 7, 1807 from Trumbull and Jackson counties. Name Origin: For the portage of canoes or other craft between the Cuyahoga and Manhoning rivers.

    In east-central WI, northwest of Lake Winnebago; organized Dec 7, 1836 (prior to statehood) from territorial county in the area now occupied by much of Columbia County, expanded northward in 1841 (into territory from Crawford County); Columbia County detached in 1846.
