On the northwestern border of IN, east of Gary, bordered on north by Lake Michigan; established Feb 7, 1835 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For Commodore David Porter (1780-1843), naval hero in the War of 1812 and U.S. minister to Turkey (1839).

Area (sq mi): 521.61 (land 418.11; water 103.50). Pop per sq mi: 377.30.
Pop 2005: 157,772. State rank: 8. Pop change: 2000-20005 7.50%; 1990-2000 13.90%. Pop 2000: 146,798 (White 92.20%; Black or African American 0.90%; Hispanic or Latino 4.80%; Asian 0.90%; Other 2.80%). Foreign born: 3.00%. Median age: 36.30.
