Porto Torres

Porto Torres (pôr`tō tôr`rĕs), town, NW Sardinia, Italy, at the mouth of the Mannu River. The port for nearby Sassari Sassari , city (1991 pop. 122,339), capital of Sassari prov., NW Sardinia, Italy. It is an administrative and agricultural trade center, handling cheese, wine, fruit, and olive oil. Zinc and lead are mined nearby.

, it is a commercial, fishing, and ferry service center. It was a Phoenician, Carthaginian, and then Roman port. Its church of San Gavino is one of Sardinia's most famous.
Porto Torres 

a city and port in southern Italy, on the island of Sardinia, in Sassari Province; situated on the Gulf of Asinara. Population, 12,600 (1966). Porto Torres is an important center of the oil-refining and petrochemical industries. In 1972 it handled 9.5 million tons of cargo, primarily petroleum products.
