Pôrto Velho

Pôrto Velho (pōr`t vĕ`ly), city (1996 pop. 287,534), capital of Rondônia state, NW Brazil, on the Madeira River. It is a rail terminus and the last point of navigation on the river. The city's economy is based on the exploitation and shipment of the rubber and Brazil nuts found in surrounding forests.

This situation had repercussions at the 12th Encontro Intereclesial das Comunidades Eclesiasis de Base (CEBs), a meeting of Christian base communities, held July 20-25 in Porto Velho, capital of the state of Rondonia.
The real goal of the measure, the groups say, is to pave a road between the Amazon river city of Manaus to Porto Velho, some 765 kilometers (475 miles) to the southwest in Rondonia state.
