Pôrto Velho (pōr`t vĕ`ly ), city (1996 pop. 287,534), capital of Rondônia state, NW Brazil, on the Madeira River. It is a rail terminus and the last point of navigation on the river. The city's economy is based on the exploitation and shipment of the rubber and Brazil nuts found in surrounding forests. |

| Government officials argue that the Petrobras natural gas pipelines will be a big boost in meeting energy demand and will both save money and benefit the environment by replacing costlier and dirtier diesel fuel currently being burned by the power plants serving Manaus and Porto Velho. Due to the acquisition of new airplanes, the launch of new routes - Porto Velho (RO) and Rio Branco (AC) - and recent authorization for regular flights to Joinville (SC), Uberlandia (MG), Ribeirao Preto (SP) and Buenos Aires (Argentina), GOL expects more growth in passengers, load factor and market share. It's now beginning work on a plant that will bring 340 megawatts of power to Porto Velho in the northwestern state of Rondonia. |
