Post, Emil Leon (1897–1954) mathematician, logician; born in Augustow, Poland. Emigrating to America as a child, he lost his left arm (age 12) and rejected a career in astronomy. He did pioneering work in proof theory and multivalued logics and was cofounder of the theory of recursive functions. He was a founding member of the Association for Symbolic Logic.
