Potthast, August

Born Aug. 13, 1824, in Höxter; died Feb. 13, 1898, in Leobschiütz. German historian.

Potthast was a librarian in the library of the German Reichstag from 1874 to 1894. His chief work was a classified bibliography of authors and published sources on the European Middle Ages, especially narrative sources from the period between 375 and 1500. The index, which included works in auxiliary historical disciplines relating to the sources, has retained great value up to the present time.
