Potylitsyn, Aleksei Lavrent’evich 

Born Mar. 16 (28), 1845, in Krasnoiarsk; died Feb. 25 (Mar. 10), 1905, in St. Petersburg. Russian chemist. Student of D. I. Mendeleev.

Potylitsyn worked at the University of St. Petersburg after his graduation in 1872. From 1881 to 1883 he was a professor at the Institute of Agriculture and Forestry in Novo-Aleksandriia (present-day Puławy, Poland). From 1883 to 1895 he was a professor at the University of Warsaw, and from 1895 to 1900 director of Novo-Aleksandriia Institute.

In 1886, Potylitsyn proved that the reaction rate of salt formation during a double replacement reaction is proportional to the heat of formation of the salt. He also studied the mutual displacement of halogens. His An Elementary Chemistry Course underwent nine editions in the period 1881–1908.
