Powell, (Earl) “Bud” (1924–66) jazz musician; born in New York City. He was the most influential pianist in jazz between 1945 and 1960, but his career was severely hampered by recurrent mental instability. He appeared with Cootie Williams from 1943 to 1944 and began leading his own trio in 1947. Between 1959 and 1964 he was based in Paris.
