In west-central MT, west of Helena; organized Jan 31, 1901 from Deer Lodge County. Name Origin: For John Wesley Powell (1834-1902), geologist and explorer of the Grand Canyon (1870), director of the U.S. Geological Survey, and first head of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.

Area (sq mi): 2332.68 (land 2325.94; water 6.74). Pop per sq mi: 3.00.
Pop 2005: 6,999. State rank: 29. Pop change: 2000-20005 -2.50%; 1990-2000 8.50%. Pop 2000: 7,180 (White 91.50%; Black or African American 0.50%; Hispanic or Latino 1.90%; Asian 0.40%; Other 6.50%). Foreign born: 0.60%. Median age: 39.70.

In east-central KY, southeast of Lexington; organized Jan 7, 1852 from Montgomery, Clark, and Estill counties. Name Origin: For Lazarus Whitehead Powell (1812-67), governor of KY (1851-55), U.S. commissioner to UT (1858), and U.S. senator from KY (1859-65).
