Described by Apple as "the third generation in the development of advanced processor technology" the first PowerPC G3 products were launched in 1997. It is specifically optimised for the Macintosh Operating System and uses backside cache to improve performance. The PowerPC G3 has been used by Apple in notebook, desktop and server products.

11 and Security Update 2009-002, a minimum 256 MB of memory and is designed to run on any Intel (NSDQ:INTC)-based Mac or a Mac with a PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 processor and built-in FireWire.
Three of the device models will now include a 900MHz PowerPC G3 processor while another one will feature an 800MHz version.
In other Apple news, the iBook line of notebooks has been updated with faster PowerPC G3 processors that now run at up to 700 MHz.
