Poznań, Grand Duchy of
a duchy established at the Congress of Vienna in 1814–15 on the part of the Grand Duchy of Warsaw that was ceded to Prussia. The Grand Duchy of Poznań was promised autonomy; however, the autonomous governing bodies in the duchy had no real power and were gradually abolished. After the suppression of the Polish Uprising of 1830–31 and especially of the Poznań Uprising of 1848, the Grand Duchy was subjected to Germanization in all spheres of cultural and public life. As a result of the Poznań Uprising of 1918–19, the grand duchy became part of the newly formed Polish state. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
