Praia (prī`ə), city (1990 pop. 61,644), capital of Cape Verde, on the south shore of Santiago island, c.415 mi (668 km) W of Dakar, Senegal. It is Cape Verde's largest city, as well as a commercial center and a port that ships coffee, sugarcane, and tropical fruit. Praia also has a fishing industry. Resort beaches are nearby, and an airport is just west of the city.
PraiaCity (pop., 2000: 94,757), port, and capital of Cape Verde. It is located on the southern shore of São Tiago (Santiago) Island, in the Atlantic Ocean, about 400 mi (640 km) off the western African bulge. It ships agricultural products, including bananas, coffee, and sugarcane, and it is a submarine cable station. Praia the capital of the Cape Verde Islands. Population, 32,300 (1968). A port on the southern coast of Sâo Tiago Island, Praia is a junction point for transatlantic sea routes. It exports oranges, sugar, and coffee. Fishing is also an important industry.
