Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park Location: 50 miles north of Eureka and 25 miles south of Crescent City on Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway off of Highway 101. Facilities: 100 developed family campsites, environmental campsites, 3 hike/bike campgrounds, picnic areas, trails (75 miles), visitor center, exhibits, nature store (é). Activities: Camping, fishing, hiking, bicycling, backpacking, wildlife viewing, birding, interpretive programs, guided walks. Special Features: One of California's most popular redwood parks, Prairie Creek features herds of Roosevelt elk and a network of trails, including accessible trails for individuals with physical or visual limitations. Near the north end of Gold Bluffs Beach is Fern Canyon, a narrow canyon whose high, vertical walls are completely covered with ferns. Together, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, and Redwood National Park (see separate entries) are managed cooperatively by the National Park Service and the California Department of Parks and Recreation. These parks make up 45 percent of all the old-growth redwood forest remaining in California.
