Prairie Spirit Trail State Park Location: North-south trail runs from Ottawa to Welda. Main trailhead located in the Santa Fe depot near the town square in Garnett. Facilities: Day-use trail with rest areas along the route. Activities: Hiking, bicycling. Special Features: Trail is built on a railroad Right-of-Way that was the first north-south rail line in Kansas (the rail line was constructed in the 1860s). The trail is a hard packed limestone screening surface in rural areas, with portions asphalted through Garnett and Ottawa. Average width of the trail is a minimum of 8 feet, and the grades are moderate and follow original railroad grades. A per-person trail permit is required.
