Preobrazhenskii, Nikolai Aleksandrovich

Born Nov. 27, 1918, in Moscow. Soviet otorhinolaryngologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1974). Member of the CPSU since 1959.

Preobrazhenskii graduated from the First Moscow Medical Institute in 1941. In 1963 he became a professor and in 1972 head of the subdepartment of ear, nose, and throat diseases at that institute. His chief works deal with diseases of the organs of hearing and with angina and chronic tonsillitis. Preobrazhenskii developed methods of mobilizing the stapes during otosclerosis and otitis and invented prostheses for reconstructing the sound-conducting system of the middle ear, as well as a number of medical instruments. He perfected and implemented operations that improved the hearing of patients afflicted with otosclerosis (Lenin Prize, 1964). Preobrazhenskii has been chairman of the All-Union Scientific Society of Otorhinolaryngologists since 1968, and an honorary member of the Italian Society of Otorhinolaryngologists and Cervicofacial Surgeons since 1973. He has been awarded the Order of the Patriotic War Second Class and several medals.
