Location: About 20 miles south of Richmond, Virginia. Facilities: Visitor center, trails. Activities: Hunting, fishing (from boat only), educational programs. Special Features: A 28-foot pontoon boat ferrys visitors to the refuge during scheduled events. Habitats: 1,329-acre island in the James River, composed mostly of hardwood swamp with a fringe of marsh and about 300 acres of upland fields. Access: By advance reservation; call refuge office.
