Preston, William Campbell (1794–1860) U.S. senator; born in Philadelphia, Pa. Elected to the U.S. Senate (Dem., S.C.; 1833–42), he supported states' rights and slavery. He resigned from the Senate and switched to the Whigs. He became president of the College of South Carolina (1845–51).
