Prigorovskii, Mikhail Mikhailovich 

Born Jan. 25 (Feb. 6), 1881, in Klintsy, in what is now Briansk Oblast; died July 21, 1949, in Moscow. Soviet geologist and specialist in coal deposits. Honored Worker in Science and Technology of the RSFSR (1946). Doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences (1935).

Prigorovskii graduated from Moscow University in 1904. He worked for the Geological Committee from 1906 to 1919. He was a professor at the Moscow Academy of Mines from 1920 to 1938 and at the Moscow Oblast Pedagogical Institute from 1938 to 1949.

Prigorovskii organized prospecting in the Moscow Coal Basin in 1918, the Cheliabinsk Coal Basin in 1920, and on North Sakhalin (for coal and petroleum) in 1925. Between 1934 and 1937 he directed the work to determine the coal reserves in the USSR. He described the different types of coal basins and their characteristics. In addition, he conducted research and exploration work for phosphorites, iron ore, and refractory raw materials in central European Russia.

Prigorovskii was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor.
