Priklonskii, Viktor Aleksandrovich
Born Jan. 26 (Feb. 7), 1899, in Moscow; died there Feb. 13, 1959. Soviet geologist and hydrogeologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1958). Priklonskii graduated from Moscow University in 1920 and the Moscow Academy of Mines in 1928. In 1930 he began teaching at the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute, becoming a professor there in 1950. From 1957 to 1959 he was director of the laboratory of hydrogeological problems of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His chief works dealt with hydrogeology and engineering geology. He devised an engineering-geological classification of rocks as well as diagrams of the successive formation of the engineering-geological properties of sedimentary rocks. Priklonskii was awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1952). He also received the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and several medals.
