Prilep

Prilep (prē`lĕp), city (1994 pop. 71,899), in Macedonia. It is the trade center of an agricultural region and a manufacturing city where tobacco, textiles, wine, and fruit are produced. Prilep was a residence of Stephen Dušan as well as the birthplace of 14th-century Serbian hero Marko Kraljevič, parts of whose castle still stand. The city also has several medieval churches and monasteries.

a city in Yugoslavia, in the Socialist Republic of Macedonia. Population, 51,000 (1973). It is a railroad station and the commercial distribution center of the Prilep-Polje agricultural region. Industries include the production of machine tools and electrical insulation materials. Prilep also has tobacco, leather, and flour-milling industries. Handicrafts are made in the area. The city has a tobacco scientific research institute.
