Primo de Rivera, José Antonio

(born April 24, 1903, Madrid, Spain—died Nov. 20, 1936, Alicante) Spanish politician. Son of the dictator Miguel Primo de Rivera, he began a legal career in 1925. In 1933 he founded the Spanish fascist party, the Falange, and was elected to the Cortes (parliament). He expounded his views in his periodicals F.E. (1934) and Arriba (1935) and made speeches across Spain. After the leftist Popular Front came to power (1936), he was arrested, given a summary trial, and executed at age 33. He was treated as a martyr by Francisco Franco's Nationalist movement.


Primo de Rivera, José Antonio 

(J. A. Primo de Rivera y Saenz de Heredia). Born Apr. 24, 1903, in Madrid; died Nov. 20, 1936, in Alicante. Spanish politician and lawyer. Son of M. Primo de Rivera y Orbaneja.

On Oct. 29, 1933, Primo de Rivera founded the fascist party of the Falange Española. He was a delegate to the Cortes that was elected in November 1933. In March 1936 he was arrested by order of the government of M. Azaña y Díez in connection with the Falange’s terrorist activities. While in prison, Primo de Rivera supported an alliance with the military circles that were preparing an armed uprising against the Republic. He was executed by firing squad in accordance with a sentence passed by a Republican court.
