(IPPI), an institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, founded in Moscow in 1961. The institute superseded the Laboratory for Formulating Scientific Problems in Wire Communication of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, which had been in existence since 1948 (known after 1959 as the Laboratory for Information-Transmission Systems).

The IPPI conducts investigations of information transmission, distribution, and processing. In 1975 it included laboratories for information theory, information-transmission methods, pattern recognition, complex information systems, switching and queuing theory, automatic control systems, information transmission in sense organs, complex biological systems, and mathematical methods in biology. It offers both resident and correspondence graduate study. The institute’s scientific works appear in the journal Problemy peredachi informatsii (Problems in Information Transmission).
