Probus (Marcus Aurelius Probus) (prō`bəs), d. 282, Roman emperor (276–82), b. Pannonia. He was governor of the East under Marcus Claudius Tacitus Tacitus (Marcus Claudius Tacitus) , d. 276, Roman emperor (275–76). An elderly senator with a reputation for honesty and vigor, he was chosen by the senate to succeed the murdered Aurelian.

His troops mutinied, and he was killed. His successor was Marcus Aurelius Carus Carus (Marcus Aurelius Carus) , d. 283, Roman emperor (282–83). Praetorian prefect under Probus, he was made emperor by the soldiers after the murder of Probus.
