Proctor, Bernard Emerson

Proctor, Bernard Emerson (1901–59) biochemist; born in Malden, Mass. He joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1926 and chaired the department of food technology from 1952 until his death. In the late 1940s he began studying the use of radiation to preserve food. He consulted for the U.S. Public Health Service in 1951 and wrote many papers including four on the microbiology of the upper atmosphere. In 1937 he coauthored Food Technology.
