Programmed Machining
the mechanical machining of workpieces on metalcutting machine tools under programmed control, during which most of the operations are performed automatically in a definite order according to a predetermined program. The coded instructions are transmitted by means of electric or hydraulic servomechanisms, punched cards, punched tape, magnetic tape, and photographic and motion-picture film. Programmed machining permits a significant rise in labor productivity, increases the precision in the machining of workpieces, and facilitates the tooling process required for other workpieces.
