Prokop’ev, Maksim Prokop’evich 

Born Jan. 17 (29), 1884, in the village of Nyr’ia, now in Kukmor Raion, Tatar ASSR; died July 1, 1919, near the city of Kungur. Soviet Udmurt writer. Member of the Communist Party from 1917.

Prokop’ev graduated from the Kazan Teachers’ Seminary in 1902. He was the first Udmurt plenipotentiary in the People’s Commissariat on Nationalities (1918) and fought in the Civil War of 1918–20.

Prokop’ev wrote such topical poems as “Political Parties,” “About Labor,” and “On Trade,” as well as articles; these works were included in his collection The Works of Maksim (1918). He translated a number of works into Udmurt, including the Internationale and A. S. Pushkin’s Tale of the Priest and His Worker Balda. Prokop’ev was killed in battle against Kolchak’s forces.
