Promet, Lilli 

Born Feb. 16, 1922, in Petseri. Soviet Estonian writer. Honored Writer of the Estonian SSR (1971).

Promet studied at the Tallinn School of Applied Art from 1935 to 1940. From 1940 to 1951 she was a journalist. Her first fiction works appeared in 1954. The short-story collections The Devotees of Sacred Art (1958), The Reclining Tiger (1964), and Who Is Spreading Funny Stories? (1967) depict the life of bourgeois Estonia. Promet’s novel Village Without Men (1962; Russian translation, 1963) is about life on the home front during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45. The novel Primavera (1971; Russian translation, 1973) deals with sociopsychological problems of contemporary life. Promet also writes on topical subjects and collaborates with R. Parve in writing travel sketches.
