(mechanics)

The stress that causes a specified amount of permanent deformation in a material.

A specified stress to be applied to a member or structure in order to assess its ability to support service loads.

proof stress

A stress, either compression or tension, which is applied to a material to determine the magnitude required to produce a specified permanent deformation usually specified as a percentage of the original length.
