Propp, Vladimir Iakovlevich
Born Apr. 17 (29), 1895, in St. Petersburg; died Aug. 22, 1970, in Leningrad. Soviet folklorist. Propp graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1918 and became a professor at Leningrad State University in 1938. His chief works deal with the structure and origin of the fairy tale, the history of the heroic epic, and the origin of ritual folklore and with the poetics of folk poetry. Propp was a founder of the modern study of folklore according to historical and structural typology. His books have been translated into foreign languages. WORKSMorfologiia skazki, 2nd ed.
