Proskura, Georgii Fedorovich 

Born Apr. 16 (28), 1876, in Smela, in what is now Cherkassy Oblast; died Oct. 30, 1958, in Kharkov. Soviet scientist, specialist in the fields of hydraulic machine building and hydroaeromechanics. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1929); Honored Worker in Science and Technology of the Ukrainian SSR (1944).

Proskura graduated from the Moscow Higher Technical School in 1901. In 1911 he became a professor at the Kharkov Institute of Technology (now the Kharkov Polytechnic Institute). From 1944 to 1954 he was director of the laboratory for problems in high-speed machines and mechanisms of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. Proskura’s main works were devoted to the theory of propellor hydroturbines and pumps, cavitation in hydraulic machines, the use of hydraulic couplings for transport vehicles, and the theory of aircraft propellers.

Proskura received the State Prize of the USSR in 1943 and was awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
