Prozumenshchikova, Galina Nikolaevna 

(also G. N. Stepanova-Prozumenshchikova). Born Nov. 26, 1948, in Sevastopol’. Soviet athlete. Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (1964).

Prozumenshchikova was the first Soviet Olympic champion in swimming (1964). Competing in the 100- and 200-m breast-stroke events, she also won two silver and two bronze medals at the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games and three medals at the 1966 and 1970 European championships. She won Soviet championships 15 times during the years 1963–73. Prozumenshchikova has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
