Prydz

a bay, an inlet of the Sea of Cooperation, which washes the Lars Christensen and Ingrid Christensen coasts and the Amery Ice Shelf (Eastern Antarctica); located between 73° and 79° E long. The bay was discovered and first explored in 1935 by K. Mikkelsen’s Norwegian expedition and named after the head of the firm that financed the expedition. The Prydz Bay region has been explored primarily by Soviet and Australian researchers. Australia’s Davis scientific station has been in operation on the bay since 1957. Between 1971 and 1974, Soviet antarctic expeditions conducted comprehensive geological and geophysical studies on the coast of the bay and in adjacent areas on the mainland; they also made aerial photographic surveys and conducted geodetic work. The Sodruzhestvo seasonal expedition base was set up on Prydz Bay in 1971.
