As the work's title indicates (Miserere, from the first line of Psalm 51, "Have mercy, Lord"; and Guerre, "war") the subject matter is timely. The images combine with the sharp compassion of Allegri's setting of Psalm 51 to form an allegory with an overwhelming message: These travelers are dead. The dramatic dialectic frames his struggle with despair in the face of personal doom, and makes a nice counterpoint to the slightly cooler exegetical treatment of Psalm 51. |
