Poetovio

an ancient city in Slovenia, on the Drava River, on the site of the modern city of Ptuj.

Poetovio was an important transshipment point between Italy and Pannonia. From the first century A.D. it served as a stopover for Roman legions, and under Emperor Trajan it was granted the status of a colony (Ulpia Traiana Poetovio). Under Emperor Hadrian, a port with moorage for the Roman fleet was constructed in Poetovio. Remains of a stone defensive wall date from this time. During the Middle Ages, the city continued to be a fortress, as well as a commercial, artisan, cultural, and religious center. Architectural landmarks from the 12th to 15th centuries are still intact.

Poetovio was excavated in 1946 and 1947 by J. Korošec, who also discovered an early Slavic necropolis dating from the tenth and 11th centuries on Mount Ptuj.
