Camagüey, city, Cuba

Camagüey, city (1995 est. pop. 295,000), capital of Camagüey prov., E Cuba. The island's third most populous city, Camagüey, is a leading hub of rail, road, and air transport as well as an important commercial center. The economy is based on agriculture, cattle raising, and mining. Industries (mainly meatpacking and dairy processing) are mostly related to processing and transport. Founded in 1514 as Santa Maria del Puerto Principe, the city was moved to its present site in 1528 and renamed for the Native American village that previously occupied that site. During the colonial period Camagüey produced salted beef for the Spanish fleets and was often sacked by English, French, and Dutch pirates. The city, which has retained much of its Spanish colonial atmosphere, is noted for its churches, mansions, and narrow twisting streets.

 is the capital. The area is a vast prairie and is Cuba's largest province. The major economic activities are cattle raising (practiced there since the early colonial period), the cultivation of sugarcane, and the production of chromite. Meatpacking, pineapple canning, and other agricultural processing are also industries.

Camagüey

City (pop., 1994 est.: 293,961), capital of Camagüey province, Cuba. Founded at the site of the present-day port of Nuevitas, it was moved inland in 1528. Because of the province's great production of livestock and agricultural products, it is now Cuba's largest interior city and an important communications, trading, and industrial centre.


Camagüey 

a province in eastern Cuba. Area, 26, 300 sq km; population, 813, 200 (1970). The province produces 25 percent of Cuba’s raw sugar. It is also an important irrigated agricultural center, producing rice and citrus fruits. Livestock is raised for meat and dairy products. There are food (mainly sugar and meat), textile, and leather footwear industries. Agricultural machinery and artificial fertilizers are also produced. The economicand administrative center of the province is the city of Camagüey.


Camagüey

The city, which is situated on the Central Highway, is an important economic center of Camagiiey province. There are food, textile, chemical, and agricultural machine-building industries. Camagiiey, which was founded in the 16th century, is the site of architectural monuments from the colonial period.
