Puerto Vallarta (pwār`tō väyär`tä), city (1990 pop. 93,503), Jalisco state, W Mexico. Located on the expansive Bahía de Banderas [Bay of Flags], Puerto Vallarta has been used since the 16th cent. as a stopover point for ships making long sails along the western coast. Today it is one of Mexico's largest resort developments, known for its sports fishing and luxurious facilities. Puerto VallartaCity (pop., 2000: 151,432), west-central Mexico. It is situated on Banderas Bay, in the Pacific coastal lowland, south of the mouth of the Ameca River. The major port of Jalisco state, it exports bananas, coconut oil, and other products from its hinterland. It is also an international tourist resort, known for aquatic sports, fishing, and hunting.
