Pugwash Conferences in 1959 and 1960 played a significant role in shaping the Freedom From War blueprint for "general and complete disarmament" unveiled in a 1961 address to the United Nations by John F. The Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs (named for the place in Canada where the group first met in the 1950s) is the oldest and most prestigious group of scientists trying to develop ways of controlling militarism; it has made notable contributions to each of the more limited arms control agreements that have been achieved so far. |
