| Set in the South during a time when Pullman Porters were awe-inspiring, when men still wore hats and ladies wore slips, when respectability meant everything in the black community, the four stories are transported along the train line. Unfortunately, though, the autobiography continues into a time when the frontier has closed, the cowboy's occupation is lost, and Love has become a Pullman porter who must endure racial segregation. Chateauvert also delineates the various ideological viewpoints of the women in the auxiliary, the tensions between the older and younger generation, and the fact that Pullman porter wiv es were seen as working class by whites, but as middle class by African Americans. |
