Ube (`bā), city (1990 pop. 175,053), Yamaguchi prefecture, SW Honshu, Japan, on the Inland Sea. It has a modern harbor and an important chemical industry. Coal mining, once the city's largest industry, has declined steadily since World War II.

Ube 

a city and port in Japan; located in the extreme southwest em part of Honshu Island, in Yamaguchi Prefecture, on the Suo Sea. Population, 158,800 (1974). Ube is the center of a coal basin. Local industry includes machine building and the production of cement, paper, petrochemicals, and chemicals (used primarily for fertilizers).

The owners of Cendrillion will open a Korean restaurant, Purple Yam, at 1314 Cortelyou Road in Ditmas Park.
A full-service supermarket -- Seafood City -- opened just over a month ago and offers live seafood and ethnic specialties such as ube, a purple yam.
Purple Yam, a Pan-Asian restaurant, is set to open in July at 1314 Cortelyou Road between Argyle and East 14th streets in Ditmas Park.
