Pushmataha County, Oklahoma 304 SW 'B' St Antlers, OK 74523 Phone: (580) 298-2512 Fax: (580) 298-5299 In southeastern OK, southeast of McAlester; organized Nov 16, 1907 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For the Pushmataha district of the Choctaw Nation, named for the noted Choctaw chief (c.1765-1824) who served with Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) and is buried in the Congressional Cemetery. The name may mean 'ready to be a sapling,' ie., now grown to be a young man; or 'qualified sapling,' indicating a rank to which he belonged. Area (sq mi): 1422.78 (land 1397.31; water 25.47). Pop per sq mi: 8.40. Pop 2005: 11,693. State rank: 53. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.20%; 1990-2000 6.10%. Pop 2000: 11,667 (White 77.10%; Black or African American 0.80%; Hispanic or Latino 1.60%; Asian 0.10%; Other 21.20%). Foreign born: 0.50%. Median age: 40.10. Income 2000: per capita $12,864; median household $22,127; Pop below poverty level: 23.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $15,415-$18,528. Unemployment 2004: 6.20%. Change from 2000: -0.40%.
