Pyongyang, University of
(Kim II-sung University), the largest institution of higher learning in the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea, founded in 1946. The polytechnical and medical institutes in Pyongyang and the agricultural institute in Sariwon were organized in 1948 out of several of the university’s faculties. In 1974 the university had faculties of history, philosophy, political economy, law, philology, foreign languages and literatures, geography, geology, physics and mathematics, and chemistry and biology, as well as evening and preparatory divisions. The university library, founded in 1956, is one of the country’s largest. In 1974 the university had a student body of more than 16,000 and a teaching staff of approximately 900.
