It is now roughly coextensive with Pyrénées-Orientales dept. Perpignan is the historical capital.

Pyrénées-Orientales a department in southern France, on the Spanish border, near the Mediterranean Sea. Area, 4,100 sq km. Population, 287,000 (1973). Its capital is Perpignan. In 1968 some 23 percent of the department’s economically active population was employed in agriculture and 11 percent in industry. It is an important region for the cultivation of grapes, fruit, and vegetables. Livestock is raised in the mountain pastures.
