Pyrenees-Orientales

Pyrénées-Orientales 

a department in southern France, on the Spanish border, near the Mediterranean Sea. Area, 4,100 sq km. Population, 287,000 (1973). Its capital is Perpignan.

In 1968 some 23 percent of the department’s economically active population was employed in agriculture and 11 percent in industry. It is an important region for the cultivation of grapes, fruit, and vegetables. Livestock is raised in the mountain pastures. The department has food-processing industries and hydroelectric power plants. Along the coast are health resorts, of which the best known is St.-Cyprien.

The Pyrenees-Orientales prefecture, the regional authority, said the plane was on a "technical flight" and was being serviced by a company based in Perpignan.
We lived there until 2001, when we moved to Ria-Sirach in Pyrenees-Orientales in the extreme south of France.
It was estimated for instance that French tobacconists in the Pyrenees-Orientales had seen their sales drop by up to 50%, while in Catalogne in Spain, just across the border, increases in sales of more than a third were widely reported.
