The largest drainless mountain lake of Central Asia, it is 65 mi (105 km) long and 40 mi (64 km) wide; its surface area fluctuates seasonally between 1,600 and 2,300 sq mi (4,200 and 6,000 sq km). It is located in the Nan Mountains (Nan Shan) at an elevation of 10,515 ft (3,205 m). Formed by melting glaciers during the Late Pleistocene Epoch, the lake today receives the waters of some two dozen rivers and streams. Koko Nor, Kuku Nor a lake in W China, in Qinghai province in the NE Tibetan Highlands at an altitude of about 3000 m (10 000 ft.): the largest lake in China. Until early August 2005, only 2 outbreaks of HPAI H5N1 had been confirmed in migratory birds presumed to be completely separate from domestic fowl: Qinghai Lake and Xinjiang Province, China, (April, May 2005) (12) and Lakes Erhel and Khunt in northern Mongolia (August 2005) (15). But during May and June, an outbreak around Qinghai Lake in central China killed more than 1,000 wild waterfowl. HPAI H5N1 viruses, highly similar to viruses isolated from Qinghai Lake in western People's Republic of China in spring 2005, are now rapidly disseminating throughout Eurasia and Africa. |
