A laser that has a dense array of equal-sized quantum dots in the active region, each with only a few thousand atoms of semiconductor material, and emits light from electronic transitions between the discrete energy levels of these quantum dots.

Tokyo, Japan, Sept 11, 2006 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu Laboratories Limited today announced that quantum dot laser technology from Fujitsu Laboratories Limited, QD Laser, Inc.
Now, scientists at the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa have demonstrated the first quantum dot laser that emits visible light, thus increasing the potential versatility of these lasers.
Today we see the clear potential of Quantum Dot lasers to enable optical interconnect and optical clock technology.
